How to Establish Credibility in Your Public Speeches: Tips and Tricks

Posted On November 13, 2022 By Joe Heaps In Articles, News /

A career in public speaking means being a strong-willed communicator. Understanding how to persuade your audience in a way that shows you have their best interest in mind, all while spreading your own message, is critical. Establishing credibility in persuasive speech allows you to build trust, enhance your reputation, and ultimately expand your book of business.

How Do You Establish Credibility With Your Audience?

Here are some simple tips and tricks on how to establish credibility in speech:

Respect your audience. Your audience members took the time to listen to what you have to say. Keep them in mind as you give your presentation; understand how to read the room if the conversation starts to head in the wrong direction. Noticeable awareness can gain you even more respect and credibility.

Talk about your credentials and experience. Before you begin with your public speeches, be sure to make note of your credentials and overall experience in the industry. This can be done via marketing material, such as posters, event displays, brochures, and social media content, but it can also be a point of discussion in your speech.

If you plan to incorporate it into your presentation, make sure it doesn’t come off arrogantly. Don’t spend too much time talking about your credentials – simply state them and move into your speech.

Credit your sources. If you’re going to talk about facts and figures in your presentation, be sure to get your information from other respected sources. Weeding out unreliable sources and keeping them out of your public speaking plans is an indirect way to establish credibility in speech.

Practice what you preach. Your presentation should be a clear-cut representation of who you are and what you stand for. Highlight your knowledge, goals, and values, and be sure to use positive body language to reinforce your character.

Be equal parts informative, relatable, and entertaining. Balance is key. Give your audience members something to learn from, laugh about and understand wholeheartedly.
